I don’t want to churn out another repetitive version of the same kind of comment everyone has been making on here but to take something positive from recent events it made me really happy to see such informed and intelligent responses, I’m glad I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s funny or okay.
Sabotaging your own city especially small independent shops is counterproductive and cruel, and I really doubt anyone in Birmingham or Liverpool or even Peckham or New Cross or Croydon etc etc actually cares much about the shooting, it has just been a thinly disguised excuse for mindless violence and an exhibition of greed for material goods, it’s disgusting what people will do if they think they can get away with it.
What with the horror in Norway and the worst famine for sixty years in Africa it’s easy to feel fury and despair at the idiocy and lack of morality of these people who, although by no means live perfect lives still inhabit one of the most privileged countries in the world.
Whilst the police obviously have major faults in terms of previous mistakes and managing of the situation the point is this shouldn’t be happening, there is no excuse for that kind of behaviour ever and what makes it worse is they’re not fighting for any kind of worthy cause. The few comments people have made about not being listened to and this being the only way to get attention are sad but showing utter disregard for your own community isn’t going to make anyone feel compassion or like you deserve help. You are not stealing electrical goods because you need to sell them for medical treatment or food you are just the product of Western culture and no it’s no good entirely blaming the government for everything. Yes, sadly, in the UK there is racism, and unemployment and lots of other horrible problems that need addressing but smashing windows and trashing a city we should be proud of and trying to improve is nothing other than moronic.
I could probably type manically about this and about politicians and the media and everything until I develop severe repetitive strain injury but I will spare everyone from that and just finish this inarticulate and ill-thought out rant to say that before we do sink into a sea of deep depression it’s worth looking at the people who can restore some faith in humanity; a riot shield as a tea tray, Turkish shopkeepers and that wonderful Hackney woman’s speech…
